Summary: Hillsborough, CA innovates to conserve water

In an effort to conserve water the Town of Hillsborough is implementing a new and innovative way to flush its water system. Hillsborough received a grant from the California Water Resources Control Board to help purchase a truck mounted unit called "NO-DES". The NO-DES truck unit flushes, filters, and circulates the water within the water distribution system.

The NO-DES method is simple; the truck unit is parked between two fire hydrants with hoses connected from each hydrant back to the NO-DES unit which results in a temporary loop being created in the water distribution system. A pump on the NO-DES unit circulates water through the loop at velocities that scour the water main clean. While it is circulating in the NO-DES loop, it is filtered down to 1 micron absolute. 1 micron is approximately 100 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair, this is enough to remove sediment and biofilm from the water. The NO-DES unit can also add disinfectant during the process to further improve water quality and ensure its safety, something current methods cannot achieve.

Hillsborough is the first water agency to purchase and use this innovative new system with oversight from the California Department of Public Health. Rigorous water testing and reporting protocols will ensure that the water filtered and disinfected by the NO-DES system is clean and safe for consumption. The Town will begin using the system in January 2011 and expects to conserve over 10 million gallons of water in its very first year of use.
